How to Fix Hormone Levels

Hormonal imbalances are an issue that many face at some point in life, particularly women. There are many methods to dealing with hormones that involve natural remedies. A well-balanced diet, exercise program, and herbal supplements are some of the best ways to help regulate hormone levels.

    Eat a healthy diet for hormone regulation. A diet rich in plant sources such as fresh fruits and vegetables provide the essential nutrients for regular hormone production. Try to avoid foods such as animal meats, processed foods, and foods that are chemically grown. This includes steak, hamburgers, canned meats, and any produce that uses pesticides. Instead, focus on eating fruits and vegetables that are organic (do not use pesticides) and foods that increase calcium, potassium, and omega-3 fatty acid intake. Low-fat milk, yogurt, bananas, salmon, and herring are a few examples of foods rich in these nutrients.

    Exercise to keep hormonal imbalances in check. This can benefit estrogen production in women and testosterone production in men. Women produce a hormone called 17 beta estradiol, which is an active form of estrogen. This helps burn body fat and increase energy, and as women age, they tend to lack production of this hormone. Exercise helps increase its production, even through menopause. For men, the glands that produce testosterone are activated by exercise. Testosterone levels are increased after a workout and can remain elevated for several hours after the workout is over.

    Take chasteberry as a way to regulate hormonal levels. Chasteberry is an herb that has been used for thousands of years because it was thought to suppress libido. While it does not affect sex drive, it has been found to be useful for reproductive medicinal purposes. It affects hormonal activity in a few ways. It decreases the production of prolactin, a hormone involved with breast milk production. This helps alleviate breast tenderness and other PMS symptoms. It also regulates luteinizing hormone and progesterone which reduces irritability, depression, and bloating in women.

    Consider black cohosh to relieve menopausal symptoms. Many studies have shown this plant hormone to attach to estrogen receptors in the body; it is thought to be a great alternative to hormone replacement therapy. This herb is believed to be effective in treating the side effects of menopause such as hot flashes and night sweats.
